The medium of watercolor is unique in that it allows the artist to either control the process or to allow the process to be free flowing and unpredictable. It is a process that allows for an unending variety of colors, textures, shapes and emotion. Karen is drawn to the exotic and the unusual. Her themes are often described as being "escape" or "tropical" art. Often she uses so much color pigment that other artists think she mixes acrylics into her watercolor paints, but this isn't so. Karen fell in love with the island style of life and living on "island time" when she lived in Hawai'i for over fifteen years. The vibrancy of colors in warm, tropical settings, as well as the variety of exotic animal and plant life have always intriqued her. This passion is reflected in her choice of subjects and how she puts paint to paper.

Although currently living in North Texas, she has the tropics in her blood. Many times a year she travels to various islands in the caribbean for pleasure and inspiration. As fate would have it, during her last visit to St.Thomas, she met a wonderful innkeeper who made her an offer she couldn't refuse. Being a patron for the arts Susan Hunter, owner and innkeep for The Garden of the Silver Palm in Charlotte Amalie, asked Karen if she would be open to facilitating watercolor workshops at her inn. Karen was intrigued by what Ms. Hunter was doing. It was a unique blending of vacation, sightseeing, relaxation and learning while staying in a lush and picturesque bed and breakfast inn.
